Hanne Darboven belonged to the first generation of conceptual artists, the “dematerializers” of art. Using a subjective, logical system (index) of her own devising, Darboven defined numerical relations between numbers, words, points and lines. This obsessional activity led to the development of a numerical fiction that could be used to measure the time close to art and life. This system of quantification lent itself to the artist’s structural analysis of texts by Homer, El Lissitzky, Goethe and others. Darboven has also integrated into her work photographs linked to cultural history, political and scientific developments, etc.
