British-born Canadian Ian Wallace has lived in Vancouver since 1953. Like Jeff Wall, Wallace is a member of the first generation of Canadian photographic artists who formed a group in Vancouver in the 1960s. Wallace devotes himself intensively to the study of art history, literature, linguistics and psychoanalysis as well as to making art. He produces large-format works in color in which photography is frequently combined with abstract painting. In his art, photography confronts art history.
