Gianfranco Baruchello

°1924 Livorno, Italy

Baruchello lives and works in Rome. His circle of friends has included Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Grifi, Umberto Eco and Jean-Francois Lyotard.

Baruchello has made numerous experimental films. In "La Verifica Incerta" (1964), he fashioned a montage of scraps cut from American advertising footage to tell an ironic non-story.

Since the 1960's the artist has also created objects in the spirit of Roman Pop art.

For his first exhibition at Galerie Greta Meert in 2004, Baruchello showed a recent series of paintings on white grounds teeming with tiny figures, comic-strip details and  image fragments. Single words floating freely amidst the imagery disrupt any suggestion of narrative flow or logic and redirect attention to the spaces between language and vision, and between one image and another.
