Thomas Struth: Fotographias 1978-2010 at Fundaçao Serralves, Porto
AUGUST 29, 2011 - FEBRUARY 26, 2012
The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal, will feature one of the great oeuvres of the art of our time bringing to Portugal for the first time one of the most extensive anthological shows of Thomas Struth’s work.
For over thirty years Thomas Struth has constructed an oeuvre where photography assumes the condition of an impressive visual essay on the world we live in and on its times and places. In fact, here photography is never limited to its iconographic condition. From the city series to the images of green “paradises”, from his portraits of families to those of museum goers, from museum photographs to the photographs of faraway or inaccessible locales such as certain docks or shipyards in Asia, the Cape Canaveral space station or particle accelerator laboratories, Thomas Struth’s photography has built an analytical corpus of the globalised society that characterises contemporary civilization.
