Thomas Struth: Fotographias 1978-2010 at Fundaçao Serralves, Porto

AUGUST 29, 2011 - FEBRUARY 26, 2012

The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal, will feature one of the great oeuvres of the art of our time bringing to Portugal for the first time one of the most extensive anthological shows of Thomas Struth’s work.

For over thirty years Thomas Struth has constructed an oeuvre where photography assumes the condition of an impressive visual essay on the world we live in and on its times and places. In fact, here photography is never limited to its iconographic condition. From the city series to the images of green “paradises”, from his portraits of families to those of museum goers, from museum photographs to the photographs of faraway or inaccessible locales such as certain docks or shipyards in Asia, the Cape Canaveral space station or particle accelerator laboratories, Thomas Struth’s photography has built an analytical corpus of the globalised society that characterises contemporary civilization.

Jean-Luc Moulene: Opus + One at Dia:Beacon, NEW YORK

DECEMBER 17, 2011 - DECEMBER 31, 2012

Dia Art Foundation presents Opus + One, the first museum exhibition in North America devoted to the work of Paris-based artist Jean-Luc Moulène. Commissioned by Dia, Opus + One will comprise objects and images created over the past two decades and will be on view at Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, in New York’s Hudson Valley for one year. Organized by Dia curator Yasmil Raymond in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition will be accompanied by a new work commissioned for the Dan Flavin Art Institute, in Bridgehampton, NY, and a major publication.

Opus + One unites two bodies of work: thirty-five objects from the ongoing series Opus (1995–present), and the monumental photographic essay La Vigie (2004–2011). It will also include a massive new sculpture, Body (2011) which was shown for the first time in the Tuileries Gardens, Paris, during FIAC in October of this year.

The exhibition title derives from the Latin word Opus, which Moulène designates as the encompassing term for his three-dimensional work. The suffix, “+ One” comes from the notation of recurrence in mathematics, yet it also reflects Moulène’s interest in the idioms of advertising and capitalist tactics, as well as his conception of the viewer as a hypothetical consumer.

DIDIER VERMEIREN AT MUSEUM DHONDT-DHAENENS, DEURLE

Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens

JANUARY 22, 2012 - APRIL, 1 2012

The entire oeuvre of Didier Vermeiren is marked by a fundamental questioning of the sculptural tradition and the possibilities of sculpture today. In his most famous works, Vermeiren examines the significance of the base, including through elevating its status to that of 'sculpture'. In his recent work, Vermeiren condenses resonances from art history and propositions generated by the creative power and imagination of the artist. Reflections on the meaning and impact of sculpture are combined with experimentation with materials and techniques. For his exhibition at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Didier Vermeiren will present an ensemble of monumental sculptures that will, through their impact on the surrounding area, undoubtedly engage in a fascinating dialogue with the play of light and the architecture of the museum.

JEAN-LUC MOULèNE: SUPERBODIES, TRIENNAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, FASHION AND DESIGN, HASSELT

FEBUARY 4 - MAY, 27 2012

SuperBodies, the 3rd Hasselt triennial explores the fascination of many artists and designers for the way in which our body secretly moulds and shapes our experiences. This exhibition does not just re-present the body. It presents the body in all of its often half-conscious operations. A large, interactive ensemble of works from visual artists, choreographers and (fashion-) designers makes us see and feel the body as the source of our thoughts and emotions. Upcoming and internationally established artists and designers operate on the boundaries between disciplines to unravel the mysteries of the body. On several locations in Hasselt: Cultural Center, the house for contemporary art Z33, the Fashion Museum, CIAP and the city Museum Het Stadsmus.
