Robert Mangold
°1937 North Tonawanda, New York, USA
One of the few painters associated with Minimalism, Mangold hesitated between painting and sculpture in his early wood constructions ("Walls"), before commiting himself to painting. Over the past many years he has created a wide variety of shaped monochrome canvases whose complex geometries are made explicit by diagrammatic drawings on the paintings’ surfaces. In his recent work, historic references are replacing allusions to the industrial environment.
